A Baltimore police officer was indicted on federal racketeering charges after authorities said he stole more than $90,000 from people while he was a member of a task force at the department.
The Baltimore Sun reports that 49-year-old Sgt. Thomas Allers headed the Gun Trace Task Force. Seven other members of that task force have already been indicted on racketeering, robbery, and other charges. The unit investigated crimes involving firearms.
Prosecutors said Allers helped cover up crimes committed by other officers on his task force by various means, including filing false reports.
"I condemn any and all criminal activity that erodes our trust with the community," Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said, the Sun reports.
The Sun notes that Allers left the task force to join a DEA task force last year, although he left that unit in March after the other members of his former team were indicted.
Prosecutors outlined several robberies allegedly committed by Allers and his team, including one case in which they are accused of stealing more than $7,000 from a woman and another one that involved a robbery of more than $10,000 from a home.
The Baltimore Police Department has made headlines in recent months and years. Several officers were charged in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray, although the charges were later dropped.
In another case, body cameras purportedly showed Baltimore officers planting evidence.
