Onetime 9/11 Hero Faces Prison in NYC Bribe Cases

Monday, 12 September 2011 06:42 AM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — A former Port Authority official hailed for helping two people escape the World Trade Center on 9/11 but later convicted in two bribery cases is facing a return to prison.

Mark Jakubek (jah-KHOH'-behk) faces at least one year and up to 25 years behind bars at a sentencing set for Monday.

The former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official was convicted in 2009 on charges of taking bribes to let a company overbill for work on the World Trade Center cleanup and other projects.

The case arose after Jakubek spent about a year in federal prison in another bribery case. In that case, he pleaded guilty to taking kickbacks to speed payments to contractors whose bills were lost in the attacks.
