Anonymous, the international computer hacking organization, tweeted a message hoping for a "bad" day for Wall Street hours before the
New York Stock Exchange suspended trading Wednesday because of a technical problem.
The NYSE quickly attributed it to an internal problem.
"We’re experiencing a technical issue that we’re working to resolve as quickly as possible," the NYSE said in a statement. "We’re doing our utmost to produce a swift resolution & will be providing further updates as soon as we can." The Department of Homeland Security also said the shutdown was not caused by hackers.
The tweet, coupled with memories of the group's headline-grabbing
2011 threat to "erase" Wall Street, still raised suspicion.
Reports later attributed the nearly four-hour meltdown to a
software update.
The Hill speculated that the tweet could also have been a reference to economic unrest in China and Greece that has caused upheaval in markets worldwide.
