Despite images of families traveling long distances to visit mom for the holidays, the typical American now lives only about 18 miles from his or her mother,
The New York Times reports.
Americans are not as mobile as they once were, according to an analysis of data from
a study of older Americans quoted by the Times.
Experts expect the trend to continue as aging Baby Boomers will require more care from their children and two-income families need more help with childcare from their parents.
People with less education and lower incomes also tend to live closer to their parents since they don't need to move to bigger cities to seek better job opportunities.
The study looked at mothers since women tend to live longer.
