Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich on Monday night defended Pope Francis' response to accusations of clerical sex abuse, saying the Holy Father "is a man of integrity."
In an interview on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time," Cupich said "any time the Holy Father has had has had actionable information, he has acted.
"Let's look at the [Archbishop Theodore] Mccarrick case, if other popes knew about it, it was Pope Francis who took action" as soon as Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York made his report on it.
"The pope is a man of integrity," Cupich said. "And he will, in fact, take the right road and make the right decisions when he has actionable material, I'm confident of that."
Cupich also called allegations "absurd" McCarrick tried to help him get his position in Chicago.
"So, as far as I know, the work … [done] for vetting people for various positions, I've never heard of one person going into the pope's office and saying, 'you should appoint this one individual,'" he said. "That's absurd."
