A Chicago man who berated a woman for wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt has been charged with a felony hate crime by the Cook County state attorney's office, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

The video created by Mia Irizarry, 24, on June 14 of a man now identified as Timothy Trybus, 62, confronting her about her shirt has gone viral on Facebook with more than 1.6 million views.

State attorney spokesman Robert Foley said that Trybus was charged with two counts of felony hate crime, which are enhancements on the charges of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct he was previously charged with, according to the Tribune.

Cook County Forest Preserve District Police arrested Trybus on Thursday, and he is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Skokie courthouse, the newspaper wrote.

Patrick Connor, a 12-year Forest Preserve District veteran, resigned after the video surfaced where it suggested that he did little as Trybus allegedly harassed Irizarry in the Facebook video.

The viral video brought widespread criticism, including from Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo A. Rosselló, who called Connor's behavior appalling.

The incident happened at Caldwell Woods Forest Preserve on the northwest side of Chicago, said the Chicago Sun-Times.

"You're not going to change us," Trybus could be heard saying in the video, per the Sun-Times. "The world is not going to change the United States of America. You should not be wearing that in the United States of America."

When Irizarry called for Connor's help, telling him that her family had rented the shelter at the park and that she was uncomfortable with Trybus's continued tirade, the officer appeared to do little.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle apologized to Irizarry for the incident, the Sun-Times wrote.

"We intend to use the video in future training exercises for our officers," Preckwinkle said, per the Sun-Times. "And we want to ensure everyone that the Forest Preserve District will be a safe and welcoming place for all.

"I apologize to the young woman who had this terrible experience. I'm troubled by the response of the initial officer at the scene," she continued.
