The Illinois officer who appeared to ignore last month's Puerto Rico shirt confrontation resigned from his position on Wednesday, officials announced.

Patrick Connor, a 12-year veteran of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Police Department, came under fire last month after a video posted on Facebook appeared to show him keeping his distance as a man harassed a woman wearing a shirt of the Puerto Rican flag, The New York Times noted.

The video drew widespread criticism, angering public officials including Gov. Ricardo A. Rossell of Puerto Rico, who said Connor's behavior was appalling and called for his dismissal.

"He failed to deescalate the situation and therefore did not ensure a citizen's safety," Rossell said in a tweet.

Shortly after the incident, the department announced on Twitter that Connor had been put on desk duty while investigations into the matter continued.

On Wednesday the department said on Facebook that Connor had resigned, adding that it would be "further addressing aspects of this incident" with more information to be shared shortly.

The confrontation took place June in Caldwell Woods, a park in northern Chicago, The New York Times noted.

Mia Irizarry, 24, was repeatedly harassed by a man for the shirt she was wearing, however, video footage of the incident shows Connor appearing to turn away when she calls out to him for assistance.
