The "Friends" reunion is definitely happening, but its return to TV has become as unpredictable as Ross and Rachel's relationship. Fans rejoiced when they learned filming for the unscripted special would take place in March this year, but things were put on hold due to the coronavirus. Now Matthew Perry has revealed that filming for the "Friends" reunion is scheduled for March 2021.
The 51-year-old actor, who plays Chandler in the hit series, announced the news Thursday on Twitter.
"Friends reunion being rescheduled for the beginning of March," Perry wrote. "Looks like we have a busy year coming up."
The sitcom's entire original cast — Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Perry — have signed on for the project, which is to be shot at the same Burbank, California, soundstage where the original series was filmed. Plans are still being finalized, but Entertainment Tonight reported that production should start at the beginning of 2021.
The special's premiere was set to coincide with the launch of HBO Max on May 27. After the reunion was postponed, the show's co-creator, Marta Kauffman, told the outlet that they had decided to wait until it was possible to include a live studio audience.
"We all want it to happen. We just have to wait until it is safe," she said in August. "This is a show that is not scripted, but this is the way the show works — we are going to need a live audience. Even if we socially distance that live audience, it really is a huge part of what 'Friends' is. ... We cannot do it without them. Everyone is all in and we are just waiting for that time when it feels connected to bring in a live audience."
