Chrissy Teigen has admitted that her pregnancy loss led her to the path of sobriety. The model suffered a miscarriage in September last year. She would have given birth to her and husband John Legend's son, Jack, this week but instead they are in mourning. Speaking with Ellen DeGeneres on Monday's episode of her daytime talk show, Teigen opened up about her pregnancy loss and how it helped save her.

"It was a really transformative thing for me and in a way it really saved me, because I don't think that I would've discovered therapy and then sobriety and this path of feeling good about myself and feeling like a new person," she said, via People.

During the interview, Teigen explained that, having grown up "in a household that was very open about loss," she was able to see that grief "can be a beautiful thing." That's not to say she isn't still coming term with her loss.

"'I hear these stories about other people. 'This kind of stuff doesn't happen to me.' So when it does, you're just so shocked," she explained. "And then you think about all the people that go through it in silence and you get really sad for them. Ours was so public, so so many people were so supportive," she added. "You really gain this incredible amount of empathy. And I really, somehow, think I'm a better person now. And I just have the best support system ever."

Teigen, who has previously been open about her struggles with alcohol, piqued interest in December after revealing she had not had a drink in four weeks. She later explained that her decision was all because of Holly Whitaker’s book, "Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol."

"One month ago, on my birthday, I got this book from my doctor and friend," Teigen divulged on her Instagram story. "I was done with making an a-- of myself in front of people (I’m still embarrassed), tired of day drinking and feeling like s–t by 6, not being able to sleep," she continued. "I have been sober ever since and even if you can’t see yourself doing it or just plain don’t want to, it is still an incredible read."

In 2017, Teigen admitted to Cosmopolitan that there was a history of alcohol abuse in her family and said she was cutting back on alcohol because she is the type of person who "can't just have one drink." At one point, she was "drinking too much" and needed to re-evaluate her habits.

"I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show," Teigen told the outlet. "And then a bunch at the awards show. And then I felt bad for making kind of an ass of myself to people that I really respected. And that feeling, there's just nothing like that. You feel horrible. It's not a good look for me, for John [Legend], for anybody."
