In 2018, the median age of those living in the United States was 38.2 years. That means half of all Americans are older than 38.2 and half are younger.[1]

The results confirm other data showing that our nation’s population is aging. The median age today is a full year older than it was in 2010.

Maine has a higher median age than any other state — 44.9 years. Utah has the lowest at 31.0 years. Only one state — North Dakota — has gotten younger over the past decade. Its median age fell from 37.0 years in 2010 to 35.2 in 2018.

The United States is not alone in the aging process: "More than 4 out of every 5 counties were older in 2018 than in 2010."
