For the first time ever, a majority of Americans (55 percent) have no preference as to whether they have a male or a female boss. Gallup also found that 23 percent would prefer a male boss and 21 percent would prefer a female boss.[1]

This is a pretty dramatic difference from 1953 when Gallup first asked the question. At that time, 66 percent preferred a male boss, five percent preferred a female, and 25 percent said it didn’t matter.

Three years ago, 46 percent said they had no preference, 33 percent preferred a male boss, and 20 percent preferred a female boss.

Among women, 44 percent now have no preference, 28 percent prefer a male boss, and 28 percent prefer a female. Just three years ago, a plurality of women (39 percent) preferred a male boss.
