A study of top-tier liberal arts colleges found that 39 percent have no Republican full-time Ph.D. professors. The research was conducted by Mitchell Langbert, an associate professor of business at Brooklyn College.[1] Published by the National Association of Scholars, the research shows that Democratic professors outnumber Republicans by a 10-to-one margin at these schools.

Engineering professors display the least imbalance, with 1.6 Democrats for every Republican. Among political science faculty, there are 8.2 Democrats for every Republican. The ratio jumps to 17.4 to 1 among history professors.

The military academies offer a more balanced faculty. At West Point, there are 48 Democrats and 37 Republicans on the faculty (a ratio of 1.3 to 1). Annapolis employs 136 Democratic professors and 59 Republicans (a ratio of 2.3 to 1).
