Conservative Billionaires Slammed as a Threat

By Tuesday, 07 October 2014 09:22 AM Current | Bio | Archive

“The main enemy of the open society, I believe, is no longer the communist but the capitalist threat” — these are the words of leftist billionaire George Soros. The Hungarian-born refugee continues, “The main obstacle to a stable and just world order is the United States,” are the words of this financier who has donated millions to the president of this great country.

Soros has said that European-style socialism “is exactly what we need now,” and that the totalitarian Chinese government is “a better-functioning government than the United States.”

What should be headlines are largely ignored.

Soros has financial affiliations to more than 30 mainstream news outlets, including The New York Times, Washington Post, and ABC. Prominent journalists like Jill Abramson, executive editor of The New York Times, the vice president of The Washington Post, and others serve on boards of organizations that take millions from Soros. He gave $1.8 million to National Public Radio — and for that and many other reasons, he is largely given a free pass by the media.

Meanwhile, David and Charles Koch, billionaires who own the second largest private company in America, are under attack in the newest edition of Rolling Stone Magazine.

This patriotic family has a family foundation that devotes hundreds of millions to charities, offers tens of thousands of people a chance to prosper, and are the epitome of entrepreneurship which should be celebrated. The charities that they donate to include a recent $100 million donation to New York-Presbyterian Hospital and charities devoted to the arts, including the American Ballet Theatre, the New York City Ballet, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the American Museum of Natural History.

As the Koch Brothers noted, Rolling Stone published an “article that is nothing more than a thinly veiled hit piece.” The Koch’s note that this “blatantly dishonest and misleading article published by Rolling Stone this week has numerous willful omissions, and contains no new or newsworthy information. We provided on-the-record responses to each of his several dozen questions and topics — answers amounting to more than 3,200 words in total — yet Mr. Dickinson quoted just 99 words in his more than 9,000 words.”

They continue —“Any pretense at objectivity is belied by Mr. Dickinson’s efforts to hype his article on social media with hyperbole like, “From toxic pollution to toxic assets — everything you need to know about how the Koch brothers got so rich.”

These advocates of a free-market economy and all-important issues of liberty are simply lambasted as universal evilists — in large part because they are successful conservatives.

As Charles Koch wrote in a recent Op-Ed in The Wall Street Journal, he is “Fighting to Restore a Free Society,” and “Instead of welcoming free debate, collectivists engage in character assassination.”

He could not be more right — the media uses their bully pulpit to attack those they disagree with.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., recently proclaimed that the billionaire Koch brothers are “un-American.” For daring to speak out against Obamacare, Sen. Reid stated “It’s too bad that they’re trying to buy America, and it’s time that the American people spoke out against this terrible dishonesty of these two brothers who are about as un-American as anyone I can imagine.”

The Koch family employs 60,000 Americans, donates hundreds of millions of dollars to philanthropic — nonpolitical — causes, yet are attacked as un-American. These private citizens who are among the most prominent executives and philanthropists are attacked by powerful politicians and their liberal allies in the media for opposing the Democratic Party.

The right admires and respects hard-working executives, while the left hurts and attack.

All the American people should say to the Koch Brothers is “thank you.”
