The news President Donald Trump and first lady Melania will host French President Emmanuel Macron and wife Brigitte at an intimate, private dinner at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate on the west bank of the Potomac on Monday is but the latest chapter in what might be the world's most unlikely transcontinental friendship — one with global consequences.
When Emmanuel Macron became the youngest Frenchman ever to win a presidential election last May, it was widely assumed he would govern from the left. Macron, after all, had been a member of France's Socialist party as recently as 2009, and had served in key roles on the staff of Socialist president Francois Hollande, before founding his own "centrist" party En Marche!
