Condit Tries Same Stunt Atlanta Mayor Tried

Monday, 16 July 2001 12:00 AM EDT

And just why was the test meaningless? Because the test was privately arranged by the Condit team, the media weren't informed of the test beforehand, and there was no guarantee that the results of the test would be released to the media if things didn't turn out well. This is the same stunt Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell used to try to distance himself from the bribery scandals surrounding the construction of Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport terminal.

The police aren't satisfied. They shouldn't be.

Oh … and here is something else interesting. You will remember that Chandra Levy's aunt reports that Chandra told her Condit gave her instructions that she was not to carry any identification when they met for their little sessions. When Chandra turned up missing, all of her identification was still in her condo. Does that mean that she disappeared either on the way to or on the way back from a meeting with Condit? Or during?

You do know, don't you, that Gary Condit has admitted to having sex with Chandra Levy? Of course you know! Why wouldn't you know? Well, one reason you wouldn't know would be that you have been getting all of your news from CBS. Not once has Dan Rather mentioned the Condit involvement with Chandra Levy. So, what does this tell us about what is and what is not news to CBS? For starters, congressmen having sex with interns. Not news.

An alert listener found an incredible Democratic site for you to play with! Spend some time with this one, folks. Follow the various links! Those words came from the mouth of none other than Mary Francis Berry, who chairs the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Berry was speaking to the NAACP convention in New Orleans last week. She told the assembled delegates that, before Jim Jeffords departed the Republican Party and gave the Senate to the Democrats, "I was just wondering when Strom Thurmond was gonna die."

United Press International reports that Berry's remark prompted much laughter and applause. Berry received a standing ovation when she finished her speech.

The only reason you're not hearing much about Berry's remark is because she's a liberal black Democrat. What's more … she's a liberal black Democrat who has been appointed to a position of responsibility by the president and Congress.

Now … just one intemperate question. Can you imagine the uproar that would have resulted if a white Republican appointee had made the same remark about an elderly black Democratic senator? Do you detect the stench of different standards here?

George W. Bush needs to dump Mary Francis Berry at the first opportunity.

In 1997 the British Parliament decided that the private ownership of handguns in Britain had to be absolutely banned. The law was passed and the handguns were surrendered. Several years later we find that the ban on private ownership has brought nothing but trouble. That's the finding of an independent report to be published today. The report says that, since the nationwide ban on handguns went into effect, the number of crimes committed with firearms has jumped 40 percent.

Think about it. The British government banned large-caliber pistols after the shootings at Dunblane Primary School in March 1996. But the Labour Party, after winning the general election in 1997, expanded the ban to include smaller-caliber pistols as well. The government collected about 160,000 guns from its citizens. According to the London Telegraph, the law is now so restrictive that British Olympic shooting competitors have to go abroad to practice, because their target guns are now illegal in their home country.

British citizens and legislators are learning the hard way that criminals don't obey firearms laws. Only law-abiding citizens will. The criminals will hold on to their guns while the government confiscates legally owned guns.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles – where it's nearly impossible to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon – serious crimes are still on the rise. Citywide, serious crimes have jumped 4.9 percent this year, and across the San Fernando Valley, they've risen 6.5 percent. Homicides in the Valley have increased 21.1 percent through the end of June.

Just south of Los Angeles County we have Orange County, where it is much easier to obtain a permit to carry a gun. Guess what? Crime rates are down in Orange County.

How long will the left ignore the facts and promote their anti-Second Amendment agenda in this country before the media actually start telling us the truth?

Just chew on this one for a while. When it comes to obtaining permits to carry concealed weapons in the U.S. there are three general types of States. No issue, may issue and shall issue. In "no issue" states you can't get a permit to carry a concealed weapon. "May issue" states "may" issue a permit if you meet certain criteria, but there's no legal guarantee. "Shall issue" states must issue you a concealed weapons permit if you meet the criteria.

Now – what about murder and violent crime rates in these three types of states? Government crime statistics show that violent crime rates (murder, robbery, rape, assault) are highest in the "no issue" states and lowest in the "shall issue" states. Now, just when have you read THOSE figures in your local newspaper?

Meet Sunny Liang. He immigrated to the U.S. from China in 1985. For the past 10 years he's taught social studies to bilingual and English-speaking students at Fort Hamilton (government) High School in Brooklyn, New York. He's sent three letters to the New York Post, each complaining about low teacher salaries, poor student attendance, and lack of parental involvement.

Unfortunately, you'd have to spend some time with Liang's letters to see just what he's writing about. That's because they're written incoherently. Just look at the samples the Post put online recently:

"Only if our society realize that there are so many factors contributing to a student's test score, then teachers will be willing to take the blam game. Who is to blam when students don't do homeworks? who is to blam when pareants don't care to come to the teacher pareant conference?"

In one letter, Liang even misspelled the course he teaches: "socail studies." In an interview with the Post, Liang claimed he was just "overexcited" and didn't proofread his work.

How, you ask, did this man become a high school teacher? He passed the state licensing exams. But the tests really aren't that hard. The Post says about 12 percent of the city's 12,000 teachers are uncertified, and many of them have repeatedly failed the state's liberal arts and science tests because they don't have a command of the English language!

And then the school administrators sit back and scratch their heads, wondering why their students can't read or write or do simple math. It's a problem that shows no signs of correcting itself anytime soon – especially if the teachers unions have anything to do with it.

Things aren't any better around Atlanta. I still have in my files a report card from a student in the Clayton County government schools. This report card has a space for teacher comments. In two of those spaces this government (teacher) agent wrote "Johnny are learning to spell good." and "Johnny are getting along with others good."

Remember – teachers schools and colleges are the academic slums of most colleges and universities.
