Marianne Williamson to Newsmax: America Needs an Economic Overhaul

By    |   Friday, 19 January 2024 10:47 PM EST

In an interview with Newsmax on Friday, Democrat presidential candidate and author Marianne Williamson expressed her perspective on the economic landscape in the United States.

"Well, I think that the United States needs to make an economic U-turn ... the economy being rigged against the average American working person. I don't think it's just the Democrats. I think the entire political elite in both parties are the stewards of an economic system, which is the people who work for rather than that economic system working for the people. And I think that we need to complete an economic U-turn," Williamson stated during "Greg Kelly Reports."

"I think that we need a new beginning in this country. You know, in the 1970s, we had a thriving middle class. The average couple could afford a house. They could afford a car and a yearly vacation. One parent could stay home. One salary could support a family of four, and they could send their kids to college. That was a thriving middle class. And today, that is entirely collapsed."

Williamson, a bestselling spiritual author and former adviser to Oprah Winfrey, entered the 2024 Democratic presidential race in February 2023. Despite being arguably the best-known Democrat still challenging President Joe Biden for the party's nomination, recent polls indicate she is running more than 60 percentage points behind, according to The Associated Press.

Marie Griffith, a professor of women, gender, and sexuality studies at Washington University in St. Louis, offered insights into why Williamson faces significant challenges in the race. According to Griffith, Williamson lacks a connection to "Democratic machine politics," the influential network responsible for fundraising and shaping the political destinies of Democrats.

"She has no connection that I know of to Democratic machine politics — meaning the people who raise all the money and make or break the political careers of those identifying as Democrats," Griffith said.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
