Three states passed ballot measures in the 2022 midterm elections establishing constitutional rights to abortion, with Democrats rallying behind the issue following the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade earlier that year.
Last year, Ohio voters approved a constitutional amendment that ensures access to abortion and other forms of reproductive healthcare. There are at least nine state ballot measures to ensure constitutional rights to abortion in this year's election cycle, according to Ballotpedia.
But Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, an anti-abortion and pro-marriage group, told Newsmax on Friday — the day of the March for Life in Washington, D.C. — that GOP candidates shouldn't be afraid to campaign on abortion.
"I think many of the Republicans are starting to understand, Hey, we need to talk about this; we're the ones that have the reasonable position here," Perkins told "Eric Bolling The Balance" and guest host Chris Plante. "We simply want to protect unborn life. We're not the ones that want taxpayer funding for abortion up until the day of birth. That's what the Democrats are pushing."
Perkins said he is pleased with the approach the Republican National Committee and its chair, Ronna McDaniel, as well as Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee and a member of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus, are taking about encouraging Republicans to discuss their stances on abortion.
"Don't be afraid to talk about it," Perkins said. "Talk about where you are on this issue. We need to build consensus, and here's a place where there is consensus — broad consensus: Taxpayers should not be forced to fund something they morally object and find abhorrent, and that is what the Democrats want to do.
"What Republicans want to do: Protect unborn life. Nothing at all to be ashamed of."
