Mitt Romney should throw caution to the wind and launch an eleventh-hour presidential bid — because he could actually defeat Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, says Will Rahn, a political correspondent and managing director of politics for CBS News.
"If Mitt thinks Donald Trump would be such a disaster as president, why doesn't he just go in as a spoiler? Why not ensure that Trump can't win by dividing the Republican vote?" Rahn writes in a commentary for
CBS News.
"What does he really have to lose? What argument, given what he's said about Trump, and keeping in mind that he's worked to find someone else to run against Trump, does Mitt have for staying out?
"Because here's the thing about another Romney run: he could win. He's been the nominee before. He has high national name recognition. He has a good chance of winning Utah, which would net him six electoral votes."
But not everybody is thrilled about a Romney run.
"Sorry Mitt but you lost last time," Brian Joondeph, a Denver-based eye surgeon and radio personality, writes in a column for
American Thinker.
"Get on board with the candidate, who while not your first choice, is one you praised when he supported your candidacy. Or you can be a sore loser, kicking sand and throwing a temper tantrum."
That latter, Jonndeph writes, "will serve only to further divide the Republican Party, electing a candidate who represents everything you say you are against. Work with Trump. Make him a better candidate. Help him beat Hillary Clinton."
He adds: "Many important issues face America, not the least of which occurred in Orlando over the weekend. Time to be a big boy. Sore losers are for the playground, not the national stage."
