Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Sunday called the suggestion by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., that virus-stressed states file for bankruptcy "incredibly dangerous."
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Whitmer said the idea of states defaulting is “outrageous.”
“We have been incredibly smart stewards,” she said of the state’s fiscal dealings prior to the coronavirus outbreak.
“For Sen. McConnell to suggest [default] is incredibly dangerous and I don’t think the vast majority of governors in this country… would agree with him,” she said. “He’s wrong and we need Congress to step up and help states… we need to have the federal government have our backs.”
Whitmer also dug in on her strict stay-at-home order.
“I know the vast majority” agree “it’s the right thing,” she said of Michigan residents.
“Because of it… we have flattened that curve because we have done the right thing,” she said, noting the state had the third highest number of positive COVID-19 cases at the time the order was given.
“It was hitting us incredibly hard,” she said, but added that “even though it was more aggressive than other states …we have saved lives.”
