Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., claimed there is a “very smelly special interest network” trying to push through the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
Whitehouse, who is scheduled to meet with Kavanaugh, made his comments during a Tuesday interview on CNN’s “New Day.”
Whitehouse declined to detail what he plans to ask Kavanaugh.
“I’m not going to telegraph that,” he said.
“There is a very smelly special interest network that is operating through this nomination process and I think we have to put a spotlight on that as well.”
Whitehouse maintained there is a “dark money operation that is operating right now to try to pave the political path” for Kavanaugh’s nomination. He also noted “all the funny right-wing groups that turn up before the Supreme Court as so-called friends of the court filing amicus briefs funded by these same special interests.”
He conceded it is not clear how much Kavanaugh knows about these alleged efforts.
Kavanaugh is also set to meet with Sen. Susan Collins of Maine a Republican centrist, who is seen as a potential swing vote on his confirmation.
