The White House said Tuesday that Pakistan needs to "step up" and start doing more to prevent and stop terrorism, echoing President Donald Trump's New Year's Day comments.
Press secretary Sarah Sanders was asked about Trump's Monday tweet that called out the Pakistanis:
Sanders doubled down on the comments.
"The president outlined a new strategy for Afghanistan and south Asia earlier this past year in August, and at that time, he laid out that Pakistan is not fulfilling its obligations," Sanders said. "We know that Pakistan can do more to fight terrorism. And we want them to step up and do that."
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley spoke about the Pakistan issue earlier Tuesday, saying the U.S. "is withholding $255 million in assistance to Pakistan. There are clear reasons for this. Pakistan has played a double game for years. They work with us at times, and they also harbor the terrorists that attack our troops in Afghanistan."
Regarding Haley's comment, Sanders said the White House will release more details about the withholding of aid in the next day or two.
