White House Counsel Don McGahn will most likely leave his post by the end of the year, Politico reports.
According to multiple sources, McGahn has signaled his desire to return to the law firm he worked at before joining President Donald Trump's administration, Jones Day, and retaking his campaign role as Trump prepares for re-election. McGahn hopes to leave by the summer, but may stay through the midterm elections.
If McGahn does leave, it would be the second attorney to abandon Trump since his longtime personal lawyer Marc Kasowitz stepped down, after the lawyer leading his team responding to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation resigned on Thursday.
"I think it's all up in the air," an unnamed source close to McGahn said. "I think he'd like to quit very much. The president doesn't want him to quit. The president wants him to stay. I don't think he knows who will replace him."
"It's hard to explain, but I think [Trump] values Don and his advice, and part of it is that Don is probably one of the only people who's ever said 'no' to him," one source said.
"He can look at his first 14 to 16 months and say he's probably had a pretty good run," a McGahn associate said.
Another added that "if we had a possibility of getting another Supreme Court justice, I think he'd hang in."
A White House spokesperson declined to comment to Politico, and McGahn himself did not respond to requests.
