Singer and entertainer Wayne Newton came to Donald Trump's defense Tuesday, saying he has never seen him mistreat women.
In an interview with WABC radio host Rita Cosby, Newton spoke about his longtime friend in Las Vegas ahead of Wednesday night's presidential debate scheduled to take place in the city.
"I have known Donald Trump in excess of 30 years," Newton said. "I've been with him on many different occasions, under many different circumstances. I have never seen him be unkind; I have never seen him treat women in a derisive way in any form or fashion.
"And I think all you have to do is look at his kids, to know that his heart is where those kids are, and they represent him best of all."
After Cosby asked Newton if he has ever seen him act in an inappropriate manner at Miss Universe pageants, Newton came to the Republican presidential candidate's defense.
"I have never seen him under any circumstances react in an irresponsible way toward a lady," he said. "I have never seen him say unkind things to a lady. I have never seen him say an unkind word to anybody.
"He's a fighter."
Regarding the tape during which Trump made sexually charged comments about women, Newton said being mic'd up for hours can lead to slips like that.
"I have been the victim myself of walking into a studio and them putting a microphone on you, and then turning you loose for two or three hours to go do what you're going to do," Newton said. "Unfortunately he said some things he shouldn't have said, but haven't we all, OK?"
The 74-year-old Newton has been a mainstay on the Las Vegas circuit for decades and said of Trump, "There is no question in my mind he's presidential material."
