A former special prosecutor during Watergate said the "smoothly written document" proffered by Jared Kushner's legal team to congressional committees "falls apart" under examination.

"It was a very smoothly written document . . . he clearly has a very good lawyer, but as soon as you start to probe it, it falls apart. The explanations that are offered seem blatantly ridiculous," Jill Wine-Banks, former assistant Watergate special prosecutor, said Monday on MSNBC's "The Last Word" with Lawrence O'Donnell.

Kushner's legal team provided the 11-page statement Monday ahead of his private testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating possible collusion with Russia during the election.

"The explanation for the back channel is not credible to me; the explanation for forgetting over 100 foreign contacts isn't believable," Wine-Banks said on MSNBC.

Wine-Banks said Kushner's assertions about the meeting with a Russian lawyer that was ostensibly about dirt on Hillary Clinton can all be verified by talking to his assistant and checking emails and texts.

"Most incredible to me was, 'I didn't know what I was going to that meeting for; I had no idea what it was about. And when I got there, it was about adoptions and so I just was bored and wanted to leave," Wine-Banks said.

"Almost everything when you really probe it, even though it sounds credible when you first read it, when you think about it, you wanna tear your heart out — these are just lies, they are not believable," Wine-Banks said.
