In order to test whether mail-in voting actually works, President Donald Trump is urging voters who cast their ballots by mail to visit their polling places to see if their ballot has been counted.
Trump encouraged voters sending in their ballots by mail to visit their polling sites either on Election Day or during early voting in a series of tweets on Thursday.
"MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE COUNTS & IS COUNTED, SIGN & MAIL IN your Ballot as EARLY as possible," Trump wrote.
He then suggested mail-in voters "go to your Polling Place to see whether or not your Mail In Vote has been Tabulated (Counted). If it has you will not be able to Vote & the Mail In System worked properly. If it has not been Counted, VOTE (which is a citizen’s right to do)."
He said checking on your mail-in ballot at a polling location will help make sure "YOUR PRECIOUS VOTE HAS BEEN COUNTED" because there will be a "massive number of Unsolicited & Solicited Ballots that will be sent to potential Voters for the upcoming 2020 Election."
"If your Mail In Ballot arrives.... after you Vote, which it should not, that Ballot will not be used or counted in that your vote has already been cast & tabulated," Trump wrote.
Before tweeting his idea of voting by mail and then checking on it in person, he made the comments in North Carolina.
"Let them [voters] send it in and let them go vote, and if their system's as good as they say it is, then obviously they won't be able to vote. If it isn't tabulated, they'll be able to vote," Trump told reporters.
It is illegal to vote more than once in the same election.
White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany told Fox News that Trump isn’t "suggesting anyone do anything unlawful."
"What he said very clearly there is, 'Make sure your vote is tabulated and if it is not then vote,'" she said.
