With tax season under way, American voters say by a wide margin of 67 to 24 percent that President Donald Trump should publicly release his tax returns.

That's according to a new Quinnipiac University National Poll of 1,249 voters nationwide released on Wednesday.

The poll, conducted from Feb. 16-19, found:

  • 52 percent of voters say Trump has not released his tax returns because he has something to hid.
  • Another 19 percent say it's because he is being audited by the IRS and 14 percent don't believe either reason.
  • Every listed party, gender, education, age and racial group — except Republicans — believes the commander-in-chief should release his tax returns like most other modern presidents have done.

Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll said Trump's approval ratings have fallen since his State of the Union address earlier this month, in part because he is seen by American voters "as perhaps dodging his taxes."

Trump has refused to release his tax returns as presidents have done since 1977.

In an interview with The Economist last year, Trump said he may wait to release his tax returns until after he leaves office.

"Oh, at some point I'll release them. Maybe I'll release them after I'm finished because I'm very proud of them actually. I did a good job. I might release them after I'm out of office," Trump told the magazine.

The independent Quinnipiac poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points.
