Rep. Van Duyne to Newsmax TV: Conditions 'Heartbreaking' at Border

By    |   Tuesday, 30 March 2021 10:08 PM EDT

Texas congresswoman Beth Van Duyne decried the conditions at a Customs and Border Protection facility in Texas in a Tuesday appearance on Newsmax TV. She also faulted the Biden administration for ignoring experts' advice that a change in immigration policy from former President Donald Trump's would result in the current flood of migrants.

Van Duyne, 50, a first-term Republican from Texas, repeatedly used the word “heartbreaking” to describe the conditions she saw Monday at CBP’s facility in Donna, Texas, near McAllen in the southeast corner of the state.

“What we witnessed was heartbreaking,” she said on “Stinchfield.” “You had kids that were in a facility that during COVID times should have a maximum of 250 people. You had over 5,700 individuals in these tents. These ready-made camps. Kids, you could not even see the floor because they were packed and stacked on top of each other."

Appearing as part of a special series on “Stinchfield” this week examining conditions and consequences on the border following the transition to the Biden presidency, Van Duyne described a lack of sunlight and recreation facilities.

“It was heartbreaking,” she said again. “And [that] this was totally foreseeable is part of the problem.”

Van Duyne added that she spoke to advisers to Biden and his administration officials, who she said were warned of the consequences of abandoning Trump-era immigration policies. Those policies included construction on the border wall, the “stay in Mexico” policy and the requirement that asylum seekers apply in their home or first nation outside their native country.

“[They] warned him, ‘If you change these policies, you can expect a surge,’” she said. “That what happened under the Trump administration was they came in and they saw these surge numbers coming from Obama’s open-border policies. And what Trump did was he went and he had conversations of some of the other countries to our south, where they agreed to keep them at the first safe country that people applying for asylum came to.

“Those agreements were ripped up. That whole idea was trashed. The Biden administration turned it over and what you’re seeing is this humanity crisis that we have at the border right now.”

Additionally, Van Duyne said last week she also visited the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Center, Dallas’ convention center, which is being used as another migrant detention facility.

“What you’re seeing is this surge at the border,” she said. “CBP cannot keep up with it. So, they are actually having to pull other agents off their patrol to these facilities to more or less babysit."
