The Biden administration will begin sending doses of COVID-19 vaccines to federally qualified community health centers next week in an effort to ramp up distribution and expand outreach to traditionally underserved communities.
Roughly 250 sites will receive 1 million vaccines in the initial phase of the program.
The announcement comes following the CDC release of data showing stark racial and ethnic disparities in the nation’s vaccination effort. In the first month of immunizations, over 60 percent vaccinated were white, compared to the 5.4 percent who were Black and 11.5 percent who were Hispanic.
“Equity is our North Star here,” said White House COVID-19 Equity Task Force leader Marcella Nunez-Smith. “This effort that focuses on direct allocation to the community health centers really is about connecting with those hard-to-reach populations across the country.”
Community health centers reach nearly 30 million patients per year, according to Politico.
