Ex-Minn. Senator Seeks Revival in Governor's Race

Thursday, 31 December 2009 02:25 PM EST

A former U.S. senator who left Washington after an admittedly disappointing term hopes political redemption lies in Minnesota's race for governor.

Democrat Mark Dayton isn't holding back in his comeback campaign. He's pushing unabashedly for a tax increase and disclosing bouts with depression and alcoholism.

He hopes to claw his way through a field of 11 Democrats to face challengers en route to November's ballot. GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty passed on a third-term bid as he weighs a possible run for president.

Dayton is a department store heir who dipped deep into a personal fortune to win a seat in the Senate in 2000. During his term, he faced ridicule for temporarily closing his office over terrorism concerns.

He didn't seek re-election in 2006.
