President Donald Trump said he stands in solidarity with the citizens of Orange County, California who are defending their rights against the state's "illegal sanctuary policies."
Trump's comments came in a pair of Wednesday afternoon tweets.
Orange County officials voted on Tuesday to join an administration lawsuit against California over its law aimed at protecting immigrants from stepped-up deportation.
The California law stops police in many cases from releasing suspects to federal agents for deportation.
"This legislation prevents law enforcement from removing criminals from our community and is a threat to public safety," Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson said.
