Sen. Cotton: 'Typhoid Mary' Susan Rice Won't Pass GOP Senate

Democrat Joe Biden would have a hard time trying to sneak Susan Rice, who Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark, calls the "Typhoid Mary" of the Obama administration, through a Republican-held Senate.

"I can't imagine that a Republican Senate is going to confirm Susan Rice to be Secretary of State or any other position," Cotton told Tuesday's "The Hugh Hewitt Show."

Newsmax reminds Biden is not yet president-elect amid a contested election and multiple legal challenges and recounts in key battleground states, so any reports of his Cabinet are mere speculation. Also, control of the Senate still hinges on a pair of Senate runoffs Jan. 5 in Georgia, with the GOP needing to win just one seat.

Cotton noted Rice was a key figure in the investigation of the Trump campaign and the taking down of Gen. Michael Flynn as her national security adviser successor, and that was well after the Senate refused to confirm her as a Secretary of State in 2014.

"There's a reason why she couldn't get confirmed in a Democratic Senate in 2013 when Barack Obama wanted to make her Secretary of State; do you really think that she's going to be confirmed by a Republican Senate in 2021?" Cotton told host Hugh Hewitt.

The original Typhoid Mary, Mary Mallon, was an Irish-born cook believed to have spread typhoid fever as the first person in the United States identified as an asymptomatic carrier of the disease.

"Remember, Susan Rice is the Typhoid Mary of the Obama administration foreign policy," Cotton said. "Every foreign policy disaster of the Obama administration, you know — from the Libya war in 2011 which is still raging today, to the Iran Nuclear Deal, to sticking the FBI and the intelligence community on Donald Trump's campaign in 2016 and his transition in 2016 and 2017 — has Susan Rice as a central player in it."

Still, the threat of a rejection of a Rice confirmation might not stop Biden from trying the move, Cotton told Hewitt.

"Given the numerous blunders Joe Biden has made as it relates to foreign policy over the span of his career, sure I can imagine him making that mistake," Cotton said.

"But no, I cannot imagine a Republican Senate confirming Susan Rice to any position."

Hewitt also asked if Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del. – who hails from Biden's home state – might be the Secretary of State in a prospective Biden administration.

"That's certainly more likely than Susan Rice," Cotton concluded.
