President Donald Trump took to Twitter to call the World Health Organization out for being “China centric.”
The president bashed WHO for giving the United States a “faulty recommendation” on keeping the borders open to China early on in the coronavirus outbreak.
He tweeted, “The WHO really blew it” and suggests the United States will look into the amount of funding it gives to the agency responsible for overseeing international public health.
“For some reason, funded largely by the United States, yet very China centric,” the president tweeted. “We will be giving that a good look.”
He lauded himself for rejecting WHO’s advice and closing the country’s borders to China early on in the pandemic. Trump issued a travel ban, which restricted travel by any foreign national into the United States who had traveled to China within the previous 14 days, on Jan. 31.
This isn’t the first time the president and WHO have been at odds during the COVID-19 crisis.
Organization officials warned Trump against calling the virus the “Chinese virus” because it could lead to racial profiling. Trump defended himself saying he’s not a racist and called the virus that because “it comes from China.”
Trump also questioned the World Health Organization’s death rate for the coronavirus early last month. When WHO reported a death rate of 3.4%, Trump called the number “false” based on a “hunch.”
