The anti-Trump sentiment in suburban America could prove an issue ahead of the 2020 presidential election, as demonstrated Tuesday night when Democrats apparently ousted Republican Gov. Matt Bevin in Kentucky and captured all three branches of government in Virginia.
Behin has yet to concede and on Wednesday asked for a recanvass in a close race.
“This is an overwhelming Trump phenomenon,” said a Republican strategist who spoke with the Washington Post. “Trump has accelerated everything. There is no path in a swing, suburban district for a Republican — male, female or minority. … It’s not a challenge, it’s a hill. … There’s no strategy to climb it.”
Virginia went blue as Democrats flipped both the house and senate, marking the first time in a generation where Dems have control over the state capital.
“This historic victory should send a chill down the spines of Donald Trump and every Republican,” Tom Perez, chair of the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement.
In Mississippi, Republicans held off a tight challenge to maintain control of the governor’s mansion.
“Republicans have a big problem heading into 2020 — and that could impact states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Colorado, North Carolina, Arizona and so on,” Christina Reynolds of Emily’s List wrote in an email to the Post. “We saw those persuasion swings in 2018, and based on last night we feel good we’ll see them again in 2020.”
