The official Twitter account of the U.S. president was reportedly linked to a Gmail address until Thursday, when it was switched over to a White House address.
According to the Washington Examiner, the @POTUS handle — which has 14.3 million followers and was cleared out shortly before President Donald Trump took office last Friday — was registered with an ordinary email address for about a week. The changeover to a White House address occurred by 1 p.m. Thursday, the Examiner reports.
Before Trump and his administration took over the Twitter account, former President Barack Obama owned it. Obama has since gone back to tweeting from his personal account. In his first seven days as president, Trump has used both his personal account and the @POTUS account to send tweets to his millions of followers.
The fact that a Gmail account was linked to the @POTUS Twitter handle could have led to hackers gaining access to the account, but it appears that did not happen.
Dan Scavino, the White House director of social media, manages the @POTUS Twitter handle. Any tweets written by Trump himself are signed "DJT."
