Trump to Call for 'Extreme Vetting' Ideology Test to Screen for Terrorists

Monday, 15 August 2016 03:18 PM EDT

Donald Trump’s plan to prevent terrorist attacks on American soil will include a screening test meant to allow entrance only to immigrants who express allegiance to U.S. laws and values.

The Republican presidential nominee wants a “geographically-focused immigration suspension in places with a history of exporting terrorism and where adequate screening cannot be performed, and a new screening test to admit only those who support US laws and values,” his aides said.

Trump, who was set to deliver a national-security speech Monday afternoon at Youngstown State University in Ohio, also plans to propose new law enforcement strategies meant to zero in people who are becoming radicalized.

For a week, Trump has been laying the groundwork for contrasting his own approach to countering the Islamic State with Democrats, calling President Barack Obama the “founder” of the Islamic State and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton the co-founder.

In one contrast, Trump will say that he intends to work with any country that shares the goal of getting rid of the Islamic State and the ideology behind it, not only allies to the U.S. Trump has noted in the past that the Islamic State targets women, gays, and people of a variety of religious faiths.

Clinton's tenure at the State Department was also expected to be a focus of the speech, with Trump planning to cite examples of foreign nationalists allowed into the country who were later connected with terrorism, according to a campaign aide.

Trump surrogate Jeff Sessions, a Republican senator from Alabama, said on ABC News’ “This Week” on Sunday that the current Democratic administration’s foreign policy created a vacuum for the Islamic State to grow in Syria, Libya, and elsewhere.
