President Donald Trump in an interview that aired Sunday called Jeff Sessions a "disaster" of an attorney general who should have never served in the role.
“He's not mentally qualified to be attorney general,” Trump told Sheryl Atkinson during an appearance on Sinclair Broadcasting's "Full Measure."
"He was the biggest problem. I mean, look, Jeff Sessions put people in place that were a disaster.”
Trump and Sessions have publicly feuded since Sessions recused himself from the FBI's investigation into Russian meddling during the 2016 election. Sessions is running for a Senate seat in Alabama.
The president has tweeted out support for Sessions' opponent, former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville. The two will face off in a July 14 runoff following a tight March Republican primary election.
Sessions responded to Trump's digs by defending his performance as attorney general.
"It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration," Sessions tweeted. "Your personal feelings don't dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do."
