Eighty percent of African Americans say President Donald Trump has done a “fair” or “poor” job handling the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll released Tuesday.
The poll, conducted by the African American Research Collaborative, also found that 59 percent of respondents gave the federal government poor marks in how it has handled the pandemic. Trump received poor marks on trustworthiness, too.
Asked to rank individuals or news sources on a scale of 1-20 measuring trustworthiness, Trump scored 3.05. Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, scored 6.93, while Fox News scored 4.55, CNN 6.18 and MSNBC 6.10.
Sixty-six percent of respondents also said race has been a factor in how protestors are treated, and 58 percent said they do not trust police to fairly and equally enforce rules about social distancing and wearing masks.
Additionally, 59 percent of respondents said they believed Trump pushed for reopening businesses once he learned that black people were dying at a higher rate than white people, and 73 percent agreed that Trump is the single most dangerous threat to African American people amid the pandemic.
AARC's survey of 604 black Americans was conducted May 1-7 with a combination of online and over-the-phone responses. The margin of error is 3.9 percentage points.
