Lawyers for President Donald Trump say he shouldn't be required to meet with FBI special counsel Robert Mueller, CNN reports.
Mueller is investigating Russia's efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election and whether there was any coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign. Reports last week indicated Mueller wanted to speak with Trump regarding his decisions to fire former FBI Director James Comey and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and the president said he was "looking forward" to the conversation.
But the president's legal team has since argued that Trump should not be treated like anyone else, and that Mueller and his team needs to demonstrate that only the president can provide the information they need. The president's attorneys are consulting with the White House counsel's office and other outside legal experts, but internal conversations with Mueller are ongoing.
Mueller could still issue a grand jury subpoena if Trump attorney John Dowd objects, but CNN reports the position isn't the president's final stance.
The White House has cooperated with Mueller's investigation, and Trump has continuously denied collusion.
"There has been no collusion whatsoever. There is no obstruction whatsoever," he said last week during an impromptu discussion with reporters.
Mueller's team has all but concluded its interviews with current and former Trump officials, but his focus now seems to be on the post-inauguration White House and, possibly, potential obstruction by the president.
