Trump: 'Fake News' — NY Times Wrong on Jim Webb for Defense Secretary

Friday, 04 January 2019 04:58 PM EST

President Donald Trump said late Friday afternoon that a New York Times report that he is considering Democrat Jim Webb as his next secretary of defense is "Fake News."

While he offered no clue about his plans to replace Jim Mattis, he wrote on Twitter that he doesn't know Webb and said the acting secretary, Patrick Shanahan, is "doing a great job!"

His Tweet in full said:

"The story in the New York Times regarding Jim Webb being considered as the next Secretary of Defense is FAKE NEWS. I’m sure he is a fine man, but I don’t know Jim, and never met him. Patrick Shanahan, who is Acting Secretary of Defense, is doing a great job!"
