Only 36% of voters believe Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.
Forty-nine percent say Congress should not begin impeachment proceedings. Fifteen percent had no opinion.
A poll taken a week earlier had shown 37% favoring the start of impeachment proceedings and 50% against it.
The latest poll was conducted Sept. 20-22 — before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's announcement on Tuesday that Democrats will pursue an impeachment inquiry.
Here are highlights from the new poll released on Wednesday:
- 5% of Republicans say Congress should begin impeachment proceedings, compared to 89% who disagree.
- 66% of Democrats believe Congress should open impeachment proceedings, while 17% disagree.
- 33% of independents say Congress should begin impeachment proceedings, compared to 45% who disagree.
- 23% say they have heard "a lot" about the whistleblower's complaint centering on Ukraine, 31% have heard "some," 23% had not heard much, and 23% had heard "nothing at all."
- 41% approve of the job Trump is doing as president, compared to 55% who disapprove.
The poll surveyed 1,994 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
