President Donald Trump has urged Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, to run for re-election in Utah, causing some to speculate the president wants to block former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney from seeking election for the seat, Politico reported Sunday.

Romney has been a critic of Trump's when he ran for president and since he assumed office.

Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon reportedly also has considered endorsing Hatch to block Romney, the Washington Examiner reported Sunday, with a source telling the newspaper Bannon would pick Hatch "10 times out of 10."

However, Utah Republican House Speaker Greg Hughes maintained Romney "could be a great ally of the president, but, as you well know, they're very different people and have very different personalities."
