Donald Trump blasted Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake as "weak" in a tweet after the Arizona senator criticized his party’s presidential nominee for being too inconsistent on his policy stances.
Flake, who has been one of the harshest Republican critics of Trump, told CBS News' "Face The Nation" that Arizona should normally be a certain win for a Republican candidate, but is not this election due to Trump.
"It shouldn't be up for grabs," Flake said. GOP 2012 nominee "Mitt Romney won by eight points. But frankly it is. I think that [the campaign of Hillary Clinton is] spending money because they have some indication that she might be in play. Unfortunately, I think that is the case."
Flake explained that it was not only the hostility of Hispanics towards Trump that has caused the Republican nominee problems in the state, but that Arizonans expect workable and consistent solutions to their problems.
However, Flake said that on immigration, for example, Trump “pivots, then pivots right back so it's kind of 360-degree pivot at times. I'd like to see a firm position that he sticks with for a while. And obviously I'd like to see it have more realistic position in dealing with those who are here illegally now."
