President Donald Trump on Friday endorsed Detroit business owner and Iraqi War veteran John James in next month's Michigan Republican primary in the quest to defeat Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow in November.
"Rarely have I seen a candidate with such great potential," Trump said of the West Point graduate on Twitter. "He will be a star."
James, a former U.S. Army pilot, is leading investment banker Sandy Pensler in the NBC News-Marist Poll released Thursday leading up to the Aug. 7 Republican primary.
James is 7 points ahead of Pensler, 30 percent to 23 percent, though local polls show the race in a dead heat.
However, Stabenow leads James, 55 percent to 37 percent among registered voters, in the Marist survey.
National security adviser John Bolton endorsed James in March — and he is backed by the American Conservative Union and the Senate Conservatives Fund.
