Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have been looking into whether any Trump Organization executives knew about or played any role in the crimes committed by President Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, The New York Times reports.
According to a sentencing memo for Cohen filed in court Friday by federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, Trump during the 2016 election directed Cohen to make illegal payments to two women who claimed they had affairs with the then-Republican nominee, violating campaign finance laws.
Cohen, per the Times, told prosecutors Trump Organization’s Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg was involved in discussions about the hush money payments. Weisselberg through his lawyer declined to comment, as did Cohen through his attorney, Guy Petrillo.
Cohen last month struck a deal with Mueller after pleading guilty to tax evasion, bank fraud, and campaign finance violations. Last week, he also pleaded guilty to lying to Congress.
The memo filed by the Southern District said prosecutors “assessed Cohen to be forthright and credible, and the information he provided was largely consistent with other evidence gathered.”
