President Donald Trump’s odds of winning the upcoming election are higher now than they were after the first presidential debate in 2016, according to bookmakers, Newsweek reports.
Political betting is illegal in the United States, so the betting aggregator US-Bookies relied on figures that were originally determined by the British online gambling company Bet365.
Although Trump’s odds dropped by about 6 points since the start of the week, his chance of being elected stood at 37.7% on Thursday, while Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden’s odds rose 5.4 points to 55.8% following the debate.
The betting experts at Oddschecker also shifted its odds for the race, with Biden’s chances of winning rising from 55.6% to 58.3%, while Trump’s odds fell from 45.5% to 42.1%.
But Alex Donahue, who analyzes political bets for US-Bookies, said that Trump’s reelection odds following his first debate with 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton were even worse, showing Trump with only a 30% chance of winning, and Clinton with 70% at the time.
"Election odds from 2016 show that this race is far from over," Donahue told Newsweek in a statement on Thursday, which noted that "Hillary's [odds following their first debate] were better than Biden's currently are."
