A transgender pastor on Wednesday said people should stop using religion as an excuse to support the Texas bathroom bill, Huffington Post reports.

“We’re going to stop using God as an excuse to hate people,” Rev. S. David Wynn, a senior pastor from Agape Metropolitan Community Church in Fort Worth, Texas, said to a group of LGBQT advocates outside the Texas state capitol. “If God hates all the same people you do, then you’ve created God in your image.”

Senate Bill 6, referred to as the Texas bathroom bill, would require all Texans to use the bathroom that corresponds with the sex on their birth certificate in government-funded buildings and public schools.

Wynn, who was born a woman, would have to use the women’s bathroom if the bill passes. Critics argue the bill discriminates against transgender people while supporters contend it would protect and give privacy to women and children.

The Texas Senate State Affairs Committee voted 7-1 to advance the bill to the full Senate early Wednesday.
