President Donald Trump on Thursday reiterated in a tweet the U.S. does in fact have a trade deficit with Canada, a day after admitting he bluffed about it with the Canadian prime minister.
The Washington Post obtained audio of a fundraising speech Trump gave Wednesday in Missouri, during which he told the gathering he "had no idea" whether the U.S. ran a deficit with Canada, despite asserting otherwise to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
"I said, 'Wrong, Justin, you do,'" The Washington Post quoted Trump. "I didn't even know . . . I had no idea. I just said, 'You're wrong.' You know why? Because we're so stupid . . . And I thought they were smart. I said, 'You're wrong, Justin.' He said, 'Nope, we have no trade deficit.'"
The Office of the United States Trade Representative claimed the U.S. has a trade surplus with Canada, according to the Post.
