A new poll suggests that Vice President Kamala Harris' pick of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz may actually be hurting her in Walz's home state.
According to a poll of 635 likely voters from local Minnesota news station KTSP, Harris' reported lead over former President Donald Trump has dwindled significantly since she announced Walz as her running mate last month.
Harris is said to be leading Trump by 48% to 43%, a drop from the news station's previous poll, which said she led 50% to 40%. This decline runs counter to the typical post-convention boost expected after the Democratic National Convention, where the Harris-Walz ticket was officially introduced.
"I think you see in the national polls that Kamala Harris is getting sort of a post-convention bump," Brian McClung, communications director for former Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, said. "So the opposite has occurred in your SurveyUSA poll, but I think this is where we expect the race to be."
But the results of the poll were all the more stark given that the sample was comprised of 40% Democrats, 35% Republicans, and the remainder as independents. Only 52% of respondents rated Walz as an excellent or good choice, while 34% considered him a poor pick. Notably, Walz faces significant disapproval among male voters, with 50% opposing his selection and 40% labeling him a poor choice.
Harris, as the poll indicates, also appears to be struggling with voters under 35, a critical demographic, with 51% viewing Walz unfavorably. Additionally, Walz is underwater with parents, with 49% disapproving of his selection.
SurveyUSA conducted the poll from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29. The survey mentioned a "credibility interval" of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
