The endorsement of Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C. was key to Joe Biden’s big win in the state, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., said Sunday.
In an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Scott, the only black Senator in the upper chamber, said, however, President Donald Trump will also pick up some support in the black community on Election Day.
“Jim endorsed him and coalesced the African-American leadership,” Scott said. “About 61% of African-Americans said they voted for Joe Biden and his endorsement was very important to them.”
He added that 60% of churchgoers also voted for Biden in South Carolina in Saturday’s primary.
“If you're looking for Alabama, Georgia… Texas, [Biden] will have to have all of the states… African-American … and churchgoers to create the type of secret fuel you need to be successful.”
He added that “I'm confident that President Trump will move from 8% of the African-American vote to at least 12% on Election Day.”
Scott argued that Tom Steyer dropping out of the Democratic president primary race proves the White House can’t be bought.
“You can't buy this election,” he said. “The one thing Trump did… he did not try to buy his way to the White House. He actually appealed to the voters. [Michael] Bloomberg did not do that. He's trying to buy the election on Super Tuesday. I think he's going to fall short.”
Scott added that a Democratic presidential ticket that puts Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts on the ticket would be “a dream come true” for Trump.
“It creates the greatest contrast between the Trump economy and ….someone who creates a caste system,” he said. “Remember, socialism is a caste system. If you're at the bottom, you never move up because when they start redistributing the wealth, you always get to the bottom [last.]”
