Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., this week joined with over a dozen Democratic senators sponsoring a new bill that would ban assault weapons.
Kaine introduced the bill, which would ban the manufacture, sale, transfer and importation of "military style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines," and would require that anyone who already owns the weapons covered by the bill be "stored using a secure gun storage or safety device like a trigger lock."
The bill also seeks to ban "bump-fire stocks and other devices that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire at fully automatic rates."
"In the wake of Parkland and countless other tragedies, it's all too clear that we need to take action to protect our communities from gun violence," he said in a press release.
"Students and parents across the country are courageously speaking up to shake Congress out of its complacency. We owe it to them to act. This bill is a critical step we can take to help keep weapons of war off our streets and out of our schools."
"I'm a gun owner and a Second Amendment supporter, but I support reinstating … the ban on assault weapons we had in place in the '90s," the senator said on CNN Wednesday, according to The Washington Times.
"I introduced the bill yesterday, but right now there aren't the votes for it," he added.
